Still Out of Contract

We are very proud of what was accomplished in a short time working with Mayor Barrett and her bargaining team regarding this long-overdue contract negotiation she inherited from her predecessor.

We appreciate the timeliness and respect we received from the new office of the Mayor of Haverhill, something new to us and very much appreciated by our firefighters and our families. The collaborative effort, fair negotiation, and reasonable compromise between our two groups have been long sought after. Though it was a long wait—over 950 days—it was worth it in order to ensure our firefighters received a fair contract. For that, we are thankful to Mayor Melinda Barrett for the terms of this contract we were able to settle.

For their efforts in bargaining on behalf of the Haverhill Firefighters IAFF Local 1011, we would also like to personally thank the members of our Local 1011 Bargaining Committee: Christopher Link, Thomas Helps, Roger Moses, Robert Miles, John Farrell, Ryan Fairbanks, Corey Pond, and Tim Carroll, all led by Bargaining Chairperson Timothy Sullivan. Thank you!

We would also like thank the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM), the JLMC, Senior Staff Rep. for Labor Joseph Hubley, and last but not least Leah M Barrault and her great team at Barrault and Associates LLC.

The Haverhill Firefighters Local 1011 are grateful for a fair contract from the Barrett administration. Negotiating with Mayor Barrett was a breath of fresh air after being out of contract for over 900 days during the previous mayoral administration. We are sure that better days lie ahead working with Mayor Barrett and the current Haverhill City Council.

Congresswomen Lori Trahan presented the Haverhill Fire Department with the ceremonial check for 16 new full-time firefighters on the department for the next 3 years, 100% of personnel costs covered by the S.A.F.E.R. FEMA Grant, worth over $4.1 million. There were many thanks made during the event while standing in front of the Bradford Fire Station where the Bradford Ladder 4 crew will be staffed as of June next year. Joining with us to celebrate was Congresswoman Trahan, State Senator Payano, State Representative Vargas, State Representative Hamilton, City Councilor and Mayor Elect Melinda Barrett, City Council President Jordan, City Councilor Lewandowski, & City Councilor Bevilacqua.

We’d like to once again thank the members of the Haverhill Firefighters Local 1011 in-house firefighter grant writers who wrote this grant for the city: Grant Team Leader Richard Shellene, Brian Ray, James Bizeur, Ryan Fairbanks, & Timothy Carroll. As well as the advocacy we gratefully received from US Senator Warren, US Senator Markey, alongside Congresswoman Trahan.

Special thank you to the work done by Chief Robert O’Brien, Local President Tim Carroll, & Local Secretary Ryan Fairbanks for their efforts towards procuring this grant by their years of work before, during, and after this grant was awarded to Haverhill. Work that was shared by our strongest supporters in the Haverhill City Council: Tim Jordan, Melissa Lewandowski, John Michitson, Colin LePage, & Melinda Barrett.

There is a lot of work still being done to prepare for these new firefighters to join the department early next year. We hope to update you more as the process continues. Please see the pictures below provided by Mike Jarvis from Jarvi Productions.

Please Stop Giving Bad Press Good Engagement!

Please stop giving bad press good engagement. What this means is that when you engage with fake news, dishonest journalism, and “click bait” meant to illicit reaction or feedback, all you’re doing is rewarding bad behavior.

When an article comes out with a heavy bias and you can’t help but react and comment, all you’re doing is encouraging more bad press. In the modern era of social media algorithms, the more time you spend on a post, the more likely you are to bring your followers and friends to that same content. When you interact and comment, the same thing occurs: you drive viewership to the very thing you view. If that content is bad press, even if it is objectively incorrect, the time and attention you give it only spreads the bad. We get false and/or misleading stories written about us all of the time; what we have learned is that the more we interact and react to those stories, the more popular they become. We end up using our influence to direct good people to dishonest content with the small hope that they give our response more weight than the media turned against us, often by malicious actors. Here’s the worst part: Whether the new viewer believes our side of the story or not, we have still helped generate real income for the fake news source and therefore incentivized the reproduction of more bad-faith “news” from these organizations. As hard at it is to leave it alone, the better we’ll all be when we can turn our other cheek to content geared against us.

If it sounds like we’re talking in code, it’s for the same reason. The last thing we should be doing is driving good people, their precious time and attention, to bad press.

Please stop.
