Firefighter Overtime....
The Eagle Tribune with direction from Mayor James Fiorentini will publish an article tomorrow about Haverhill “ Firefighter Pay “. The Haverhill Firefighters Executive Board has for 6 years warned the Mayor and the Chief that not filling positions would lead to ballooning Overtime Costs. We have been met with opposition from the Mayor. The mayor has claimed over and over that he believed it was “cheaper” to pay the overtime costs than to hire new firefighters. After a four year drought with no new hires, the mayor finally filled a few vacant positions. After 24 members of the department had retired or transferred, three of which losing their lives to job related Cancers. Only filling 9 positions leaves several vacant positions left to be filled with overtime. Year after year it was the Union pushing for the filling of positions at budget hearings, to no avail.  We want Transparency!

In 2011 alone, the unwillingness to fill the vacant budgeted positions cost $ 493,215.13 in overtime alone.   Had the previously mentioned vacant positions been filled as people retired, the savings to the city and taxpayers would have been $ 966,215.13. When Mayor stole roughly $ 500,000 from the fire department overtime budget knowing that this shortfall would be realized midway through the fiscal year it was a deliberate attempt to put the safety of taxpayers and firefighters at risk. Rescue 1 was a target long before January. There is no other explanation for this malicious and spiteful behavior. Would the Mayor submit to a Polygraph? We want Transparency!

How do the taxpayers feel about paying exorbitant needless amounts of overtime to firefighters when their taxes are raised 2.5% a year and the water and wastewater rates go up every year?  Did we mention the Mayor has 14 million dollars hidden….. Well it was hidden until the Massachusetts Dept. of Revenue recently certified it Free Cash.  This notion that the amount firefighters have earned in overtime is somehow the unions fault, couldn’t be further from the truth!

IT IS TIME FOR TRANSPARENCY AT CITY HALL!
